Memorial held for MSP trooper killed in line of duty

The service was on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m.

FREE SOIL TOWNSHIP, Mich. - Five years ago, on Sept. 9, 2013, Michigan State Police Trooper Paul Butterfield was killed in the line of duty.

A memorial service was held at the roadside memorial in the place where Butterfield was murdered by a 19-year-old Irons man.

The service was on Sunday, Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. and it was organized by the Fountain Area Fire Department, which was the first emergency unit to respond to the scene when Butterfield was killed.

“We will never forget,” said Fountain Fire Lt. Shirley Chancellor told the Mason County Press.
