MDOT wants feedback from you on road usage charges

The state is looking for input from the public through a survey that's now available online.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Michigan is exploring changes in how our roads, bridges and public transit systems are funded. The switch could impact how much you pay at the pump.

The state is looking for input from the public through a survey that's now available online. The survey is part of a study being done by the Michigan Department of Transportation(MDOT).

With more electric vehicles on the roads, MDOT is looking into more sustainable ways to maintain our infrastructure.

Right now, roads are funded through a combination of federal, state and local funds—half from the gas tax, and the other half from vehicle registration fees.

On average drivers pay about $400 a year to maintain our roads.

But according to MDOT, people who drive older, less fuel-efficient vehicles end up paying more money.

The study is considering what's known as road usage charges. Instead of paying the gas tax you would pay a few cents for each mile you drive.

Those who take part in the survey get a $10 gift card.

It's important to note that this is just a study, and any changes would need to undergo a long process that includes new legislation.

That means changes are not happening anytime soon, if at all.

A handful of other states have already implemented road usage charge programs including Oregon, Virginia and Hawaii. It often applies only to electric vehicle drivers and usually ranges from about $50-150 per year.
