MUSKEGON, Mich. - Miss Shoreline, Emily Sioma, was crowed Miss Michigan on Saturday night in Muskegon. Miss Shoreline is based out of Norton Shores.
Sioma won a $12,000 scholarship and the chance to compete in Miss America.
The annual Miss Michigan Scholarship Pageant was held at the Frauenthal Center. The pageant has been located in Muskegon since 1950.
The not-for-profit corporation provides scholarship to young Michigan women.
The top 12 contestants were: Miss Stateline (Vivian Zhong), Miss Shoreline (Emily Sioma), Miss Washtenaw (Patricia Sholtis), Miss Heartland (Emily Smith), Miss Danish Festival (Mollie Rodenhouse), Miss Saginaw County (Shelby Saint Souver), Miss Bridgefest (Katherine Daniel), Miss Lakeshore (Ashton Strother), Miss Oakland County (Emma Seidel), Miss Tip of the Mitt (Jenna Holt), Miss Downriver (Mallory Rivard) and Miss Monroe County (Brooklynn Lambert).
Last year's winner was Heather Kendrick from Marysville. She competed for Miss Michigan as Miss Washtenaw County. The last Miss Michigan to win the national Miss America pageant was Kirsten Haglund in 2008. Only five Miss Michigan's have won the national title.
The Miss America competition recently announced that it will no longer have a swimsuit competition. This year's Miss Michigan pageant still had the swimsuit competition, as the national developments will take time to trickle down to the local events.
On Friday night, Ashton Strother, Miss Lakeshore, won the preliminary talent award and Emily Sioma, Miss Shoreline, won the preliminary swimsuit award. On Thursday, Katherine Daniel, Miss Bridge Fest, won the preliminary talent award and Mallory Rivard, Miss Downriver, won the preliminary scholarship award.
