MARSHALL, Mich. — Troopers with the Michigan State Police Marshall Post are grieving the loss of one of their K9s, who died due to a medical emergency on Wednesday.

6-year-old Solo, who is partnered with Trooper Jereme Miller, was taken in for emergency surgery to correct a twisted stomach, which can be life-threatening.

Michigan State Police said veterinarians determined surgery would not be successful and chose to euthanize Solo.

“This is a huge blow to the Marshall Post family, and as you can all imagine, a bigger impact on Trooper Miller and his family”, said F/Lt. Barry Schrader, post commander of the Marshall Post. “In speaking with Trooper Miller, Solo finished his career like a trooper would. He assisted our Southwest Enforcement Team (SWET) with a hit on 4 kilos of methamphetamine during a search warrant hours before his medical emergency.”

Miller said this week was the five-year anniversary of when he and Solo graduated from canine school. Police said Solo helped apprehend 68 suspects and confiscate over 40 pounds of narcotics over his career.

"We want to take this time to thank Solo for his dedication and service to the MSP and citizens of the State of Michigan," reads a release.

Police went on to ask Michiganders to keep Miller, his family and the Marshall Post in their thoughts.

Miller has served 11 years on the K9 Unit. Solo was his second dog.
