A wildfire that was once covered approximately more than 100 acres in Newaygo County on the west side of Bills Lake near M-82, is now 100% contained. Even though the fire is completely contained the county says there is no open burning today.
There are still numerous emergency vehicles near M-82 and officials are still asking people to avoid the area. Crews were able to keep the fire south of M-82. They are still trying to determine the origin of the fire.
Newaygo County firefighters were first sent out about 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 1. When the fire was at its worst on Tuesday, 15 homes were threatened and two were evacuated but no buildings were destroyed in the fire. Originally it was reported that the fire spread to 250 acres, Newaygo County Emergency Services now says 105 acres were burned.
Eleven different fire departments, the National Forest Service and the DNR responded to the fire.
No injuries have been reported.
The Michigan DNR asked Michigan residents to restrict outdoor burning on Tuesday due to dry and windy conditions.
“We are currently seeing a significant increase in wildfire activity,” Paul Rogers, fire prevention specialist for the DNR, said in a news release that asked residents to avoid burning anything outside.
