GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — Teacher of the Week is back!

If there's a teacher in your life who you think deserves some recognition, here's your chance!

13 ON YOUR SIDE Mornings is launching Teacher of the Week. 

Here's how it works:

Send in your nominations to our email at news@13onyourside.com or text us at 616-559-1310. Make sure to include a short explanation of why the educator deserved to be recognized, as well as a photo. 

Then every Monday, a winner will be announced.

Teacher of the Week Winners

On Oct. 4, the winner of Teacher of the Week was Mary Schuitema with the Spring Lake Public Schools district. Schuitema is a first grade teacher at Jeffers Elementary School. This is her first year at Jeffers, but she has been teaching for 11 years. Schuitema’s nominator said she is understanding of all students and of all different learning styles.

On Oct. 11, the winner of Teacher of the Week was Amanda Castle with Hope Academy of West Michigan. Castle is a first grade teacher with nearly 15 years of experience. She was nominated by someone who describes her as the teacher who always puts the students' needs above her own.

On Oct. 18, the winner of Teacher of the Week was Katelyn Yaklin with Grand Rapids Public Schools. Yaklin is a kindergarten teacher at Harrison Park Elementary School, where she has spent her entire teaching career. Dr. Heather Thompson is the school's principle, and she had nothing but good things to say about Yaklin. "(If a) picture would be in the dictionary next to 'excellent teacher,' it would be Ms. Yaklin," Thompson said.

On Oct. 25, the winner of Teacher of the Week was Ashley Schreuder with Cedar Trails Elementary School. Schreuder's nominator said she's a teacher who deals with a unique set of challenges working with students diagnosed with autism. Outside of the classroom, Schreuder coaches Special Olympics gymnastics. Inside the classroom, her students and their love for learning comes first.
