KENT COUNTY, Mich. — A mother and her 17-month-old baby are dead after a crash on Sunday morning in Caledonia Township, according to the Kent County Sheriff's Office.
Just after 10:30 a.m. deputies responded to a single-car crash on 84th Street, west of Thornapple River Drive.
KCSO said the preliminary investigation showed that the father, a 40-year-old man from Woodland, was driving a pickup truck westbound on 84th Avenue when his 36-year-old wife was tending to their baby in the backseat.
While the mom and baby were unbuckled, deputies said it's believed that the vehicle hydroplaned and crashed into an embankment, causing the mother and baby to the thrown from the vehicle.
KCSO said an off-duty emergency room doctor saw the crash and attempted to provide medical care, but the mom and baby died. The father was not injured.
