CALHOUN COUNTY, Mich. — A 20-year-old Marshall man is dead after Michigan State Police said he ran from a traffic stop Thursday evening.

Troopers from the Marshall Post said patrol officers spotted a motorcycle on eastbound I-94 without a registration plate just before 8 p.m. Thursday.

Troopers turned on their lights and while side-by-side of the motorcycle, authorities said the man refused to pull over his bike.

That's when investigators said the motorcycle sped up and continued running on eastbound I-94.

MSP said troopers did not chase after the motorcycle, citing their policy of not engaging in a vehicle pursuit for common traffic violations.

Authorities said that the motorcyclist continued speeding and entered into heavy traffic at the I-69 interchange.

That's where the motorcyclist attempted to split lanes and struck the front of the car, causing the bike to lose control and toss the rider.

The rider died from his injuries at the scene, authorities said. No one else was hurt.

Law enforcement said traffic in the area was shut down for about 3 hours. It's since reopened.

The crash remains under investigation.
