MSU organizations offering healing opportunities all week

Four organizations are offering a week filled with events that encourage healing and growing. Monday's event decorated luminaries to be lit by Spartans old and new.

EAST LANSING, Mich — The Breslin Center was a source of healing at Michigan State University on Monday.

"I think we both have Spartan's Strong, Spartan's Will, that's kind of something that's been going through the news for a while, so together we will pursue and we will persevere," said graduate student Paige Plunkett describing her luminary lighting bags on Monday.

It's something that can't be expressed enough, whether you're far along on your healing journey, or you just started, there's a community waiting to help at MSU.

"Just being together is going to be the most effective thing for us, right? Out so you can heal as a community," said Plunkett.

Together with the Associated Students of MSU, Students Demand Action, Sit Down Michigan State and March For Our Lives MSU, a week filled with events that encourage healing are planned the week of "One Year Since".

"I think it's really important to acknowledge like a year later, there's no one, there's no blueprint for healing, right? Everyone's going to be at different places," said undergraduate student body president Emily Hoyumpa.

Sophomore student Sophie Mahnken used Monday's Luminary Lantern Day to make a small memorial for the students killed during last year's shooting.

"It's really amazing all of the events they're doing here at MSU because it really shows that there's much more love than hate in the world and I think it's been really amazing to come together with all of my friends and even people I don't know, just to know that there's so much more love here at this community," said Mahnken.

Hoyumpa said luminary lanterns lit in green aren't only for students, alumni everywhere are encouraged to leave out a lantern of sorts in honor of the entire MSU family that's still grieving.

The ones made on Monday can either be put in a home, or left at the Sparty statue during the schools memorial on Tuesday night.

"I think it just goes to show how broad the Spartan community is and how like just how many people represents and how just the just power of numbers and power of just being together as a Spartan," said Hoyumpa.
