WYOMING, Mich. — Multiple agencies responded to a fire in a commercial building in Wyoming early Sunday morning, according to the Wyoming Fire Department.

Around 6 a.m. crews responded to reports of a fire in the 2600 block of Prairie Street S.W.

WFD said the reports came from observant neighbors and passersby who saw smoke and flames coming out of the building.

WFD said the first crews to arrive saw fire coming through the roof. They said several explosions happened, likely from propane tanks on site.

According to crews, the fire had spread quickly throughout the building, causing significant structural damages and creating challenges in putting the fire out.

WFD said they were eventually able to contain the fire and extinguish it, preventing it from fully spreading to the rest of the building.

No one was in the building at the time of the fire and there were no injuries or fatalities.

Crews said the neighbors who called 911 to report the fire likely helped to save the building and its contents from being a total loss.

WFD said they want to remind all business owners and residents of the importance of ensuring properties have working smoke alarms, fire extinguishers and clear emergency exit paths.

The fire is still under investigation to determine the cause.

WFD said they had direct and indirect help from:

  • Wyoming Police Department
  • Wyoming Public Works and Traffic Department
  • Grand Rapids Fire Department
  • Grandville Fire Department
  • Grandville Public Works
  • Byron Township Fire Department
  • Kentwood Fire Department
  • Georgetown Township Fire Department
  • DTE
  • Consumers Energy
