MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. — Muskegon Heights is under a boil water advisory after a system failure caused a drop in water pressure on Wednesday. Officials estimate it will remain in effect for about three days.
Officials say the supervisory control and data acquisition system failed, causing the water pressure in the city's system to drop. When pressure drops in the water system, potentially harmful bacteria can be introduced to the water supply.
Muskegon Heights officials shared an update Wednesday evening that water pressure has been restored.
As a precautionary measure, a boil water advisory has been issued for Muskegon Heights. Despite water pressure returning, the boil water advisory remains in place.
Residents are asked to boil their water for at least one minute and let it cool before drinking it or using it to cook, prepare food or brush your teeth. You do not need to boil your water to do laundry, wash your hands or bathe.
Crews will be flushing the city's water system and taking regular bacterial samples to monitor the water quality.
Muskegon Heights officials say they will update residents when the advisory is lifted. It is expected to stay in effect until the water is safe to drink.
If you need bottled water, you can visit the Muskegon Heights Farmers Market from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, and again Thursday at 8 a.m. until noon.
Crews are working to resolve the issue. Once the city gets water samples that confirm it is safe to drink, they will lift the boil water advisory.
