MUSKEGON, Mich. — Five parks in Muskegon have been selected for major facelifts, including the potential for pickleball courts and food truck plazas.

In 2022, Muskegon hired a consultant to create a Parks & Recreation Master Plan, outlining the conditions of each of the city's parks. The plan was made to be used to apply for future grant funding.

In 2023, the Parks & Recreation Department enhanced the plan through a public engagement and capital planning effort. This led to the Parks & Recreation Advisory Committee and the City Commission to approve a 2024 Parks & Recreation Capital Improvement Plan.

After all of this work was done, the Parks & Recreation Department selected five parks to undergo the most intensive park planning improvements. Those parks are:

The city's goal is to determine which upgrades should be made to existing amenities in the parks and what new amenities would best add to the parks' character.

A draft of all park plans will be created using ideas submitted by community members and survey data from the master plan.

The park plans will be shared with the community for feedback in person and online, then revised and shared online again. There will be one meeting per park.

Ideas for the parks range from kayak launches to hammock parks to more accessible fishing areas.

"There have been a lot of different ideas in terms of playground upgrades to pickleball, to improving the connections between our other parks," said Mayor of Muskegon Ken Johnson. "It's pretty much open to ideas and concepts and desires and wishes of our community."

Dates, times and locations for these in-person meetings, as well as links to provide feedback online, can be found here
