MUSKEGON, Mich. — Students at a Muskegon Township elementary school are helping people in their community with their latest project.
Preschool, kindergarten and 1st graders at Orchard View Early Elementary School collected thousands of canned goods, toiletries and other goods for people in need.
"I like sharing food with my people,” said student Roslyn Gardner.
“It's because it's fun to share,” said student Paiz’lynn Guy.
"We want them to survive, and if they don't survive, then people will go missing in their town,” said student Amina Dooley.
The students collected nearly 7,000 items to hand out.
Principal Megan Johnson says the school partnered with Mission for Area People as part of their caring school community curriculum.
The goal is to help teach kids about the importance of helping people in their community.
“It's really about building community. Not just here at school, but also out in the community. And so that's why we did this big community service project. It's very important to us and really supporting the needs of everyone in our community,” said Johnson.
Last year the school collected 2,000 items for people in need.
Johnson said seeing her students collect thousands more this year gives her hope for the next generation.
"Just makes me very proud to know that they have a sense of belonging in our school, in our district and even out in the community. So I can tell we have some real leaders here,” said Johnson.
The school collected items from Nov. 1 until Nov. 19. Mission for Area People will collect the items from the school on Nov. 20.
