Muskegon YMCA fundraiser to benefit those fighting cancer

A program offered by the Muskegon YMCA, called Livestrong, helps people like Lisa Henry get through their cancer diagnosis.

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan — There's a program offered by the Muskegon YMCA that helps people like Lisa Henry get through their cancer diagnosis.

"It's a safe, supportive, welcoming environment, for anybody who's fought cancer, and it could be a couple of years ago, several years ago, are currently fighting cancer," said Henry.

Henry was diagnosed in 2022 with endometrial cancer, a type that begins in the uterus.

"First round through treatment, I was pretty intense with chemo and radiation and hair loss, and you know, really intense on my body," said Henry.

Through the 12-week Livestrong program, cancer fighters and survivors go through classes that are meant to enrich their lives, build community and keep their bodies active.

"We did everything from Zumba, nutrition class, chair yoga, cardio drumming, bodyweight step, aerobics, circuit training, TRX bands," said Henry.

Livestrong tuition is free, but it's funded through the YMCA's annual Black Tie for the Y Gala that's coming up on Saturday.

Arin Sessink is the Muskegon Y's Community Engagement Coordinator.

"We have appetizers, dinner, drinks, dessert, all the goods. And then after that main program people can stay for music, dancing, late night snack," said Sessink.

Sessink said they're thankful that they have the public's help in getting those in need the love and care they deserve.

"Another beautiful part of the program is that it's survivors all coming together and they really care for one another and have that awesome social connection," said Sessink.

This will be Henry's first black tie event, something she looks forward to attending.

"it's definitely nice knowing others truly care about you, you know, for what you've already been through," said Henry.

The Black Tie for the Y Gala will be Saturday, Feb. 3 at 6:30 p.m. in downtown Muskegon. Get more information on tickets and the event here.
