MUSKEGON, Mich. — Work on the shoreline in the Adelaide Pointe development in Muskegon was paused Monday after contractors mistakenly dug on the wrong side of a peninsula in Muskegon Lake.
Contractors were working on the development's wetland restoration project.
Management stopped the contractors after the mistake was noticed and contacted the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE).
Officials worked with developers and contractors to determine how to best move forward with the project.
"We’re aware of the unauthorized work in the wetlands and have been in contact with the developer and their contractors to ensure they understand and comply with the conditions of their permit. Determinations on possible penalties or required remediation to the damaged wetlands will be made after EGLE assembles the facts and is able to review what happened and why," EGLE said in a statement.
The Adelaide Pointe developers said they did not have permits to dig in that area of Muskegon Lake, and that the technique being used is for digging ponds and trenches, not around wetlands.
"Some additional uncertain details were discussed and we are even more aligned on how to protect the environment and do some great work for the public," a post on the development's Facebook page reads.
Work in the area was resumed about two hours later.
Adelaide Pointe will be a 40-acre marina and condo development, complete with hundreds of living spaces, boat slips, a hotel, shared office space, two restaurants and more.
Construction has been ongoing since May 2023. The development is slated to open in May, with additional projects and construction continuing through 2027.
Developers have long touted the project’s green credentials, citing efforts to reseed native marine vegetation within the broader push to rehabilitate the contaminated former industrial site upon which it will sit.
