Boat catches fire on Muskegon Lake during TV show shoot

Around 20 people on a 50-foot powerboat were rescued Sunday evening when it caught fire on Muskegon Lake.

Around 20 people on a 50-foot powerboat were rescued Sunday evening when it caught fire on Muskegon Lake.

The fire, reported just after 6:40 p.m. near the Great Lakes Marina, engulfed much of the boat and sent black smoke overhead.

Around 20 people were onboard when they heard a "pop" and jumped off to their safety, according to a Muskegon County Sheriff's Department officer at the scene.

"It was when we were on our way back heading towards dock, the smoke started to get darker, a little thicker, and the person who owned the boat he told everybody, get to the front, it's about to blow up," says Blair Broussard who was on the boat.

"He ended up lifting up the seats that covered the engine, and when he did smoke started going whoof, fire started taking off, it was crazy, it was crazy," says Broussard.

One man on the burning boat jumped into the water but was pulled out by the captain because he could not swim.

"I got on the gas and rushed up to the boat and put my bow on their bow and then I had people coming over from the front of their boat to the front of my boat and loaded as many people as I could get on my boat and then backed away because I had too may people and my boat was starting to go down," says Chris Gilmore.

Two other boats came to the rescue of the distressed vessel to help get its passengers to safety. The people on board were shooting a TV show when it caught fire.

The equipment is considered a total loss.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire about 20 minutes later.

Police say it's an older boat, and they do not plan to do an investigation.
