MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. — An ambulance and police cruiser were involved in a crash on northbound US-31 in Muskegon County Friday, according to the White Lake Ambulance Authority.
Jonathan Degen, Director of the White Lake Ambulance Authority, says it happened Friday night.
The ambulance and a sheriff's deputy were responding to a crash involving a person who was unresponsive in Blue Lake Township.
The ambulance was driving with lights and sirens to the call with the sheriff's deputy driving behind them. As they approached, a driver pulled into the left lane, in front of first responders, causing the ambulance to hit them and the sheriff's deputy to hit the ambulance.
The ambulance is totaled, Degen said, but there were no injuries.
A nearby company, Emergency Services of Muskegon, already has another rig ready. They will be taking the ambulance box from the totaled one and set it up on the new frame. Degen said you can do this up to three times with ambulances, and this specific vehicle has been in one crash prior.
It will take three to six months to repair the ambulance, but Degen said this is better than waiting for a custom ambulance, which can take about two years.
Degen reminds drivers to pull to the right as soon as you see an ambulance or first responder with their lights and sirens on.
