Navy veteran marks 25 years watching Fourth of July fireworks aboard the USS LST 393

The WWII-era ship-turned-museum is docked in Muskegon and offers up a unique view of Independence Day fireworks.

MUSKEGON, Mich. — The deck of the USS LST 393 may just be one of the better spots on the lakeshore to watch the fireworks along the water. 

Cyndi Smith and her kids, now all grown up, make an effort to come back to Muskegon for the Fourth of July each year. 

Her father, United States Navy Veteran and lifelong Muskegon resident Robert Raymond, looks forward to spending the Fourth of July each year there. 

Raymond served in the Navy in the late 50s and said watching the show aboard the ship is especially meaningful. 

"In 1957 I rode on one of these ships," Raymond said. 

He said Independence Day is a day to honor veterans, too. 

"The holiday isn't the purpose of having pool parties and hot dogs. The purpose of the holiday is to honor those who are gone and those who are still fighting," Raymond said.
