MUSKEGON, Mich. — Muskegon County search and rescue crews recovered the body of a man who fell into Lake Michigan.
Around 10:30 a.m. Thursday, a 26-year-old man on board a fishing boat fell into the water about 2 miles offshore from the Muskegon Channel.
Those inside the boat tried to throw him a lifevest, officials said, but he wasn't able to grab it. Within minutes of him falling into the water, they lost sight of him.
The United States Coast Guard was asked to send an air unit to help with the search and rescue efforts.
Later into the afternoon, the search for him turned into a recovery effort.
Because of wind and large surf Thursday, crews had to pause the search for safety reasons.
Once it was safe to resume on Friday, crews located the man about 2 miles offshore in about 80 feet of water.
Authorities are not releasing the man's name at this time.
