MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) -- A Muskegon County man will go to trial for allegedly beating his grandfather to death.
Trent Humphreys-McPherson faces murder charges in the January death of Dennis McPherson.
On Monday, Humphreys-McPherson was in court, where the evidence was presented.
Humphreys-McPherson, 25, is accused of killing his 71-year-old grandfather. Autopsy results show McPherson died from multiple skull fractures.
At Humphreys-McPherson's preliminary hearing, police officers and detectives with Muskegon Township told the judge they found the grandfather inside his home, with furniture overturned and dresser drawers dumped out. A 50-inch television was missing.
Police found a small hatchet hidden behind a chimney brick at the home where Humphreys-McPherson was living. They believe it's the murder weapon.
Kerri Sue Crawford was Humphreys-McPherson's fiance in January. She says after Humphreys-McPherson took his grandfather's television, he traded it for crack cocaine. Crawford says when Humphreys-McPherson came out of his grandfather's home, his knuckles were red and scuffed.
Crawford is charged with lying to police in the case.
In the preliminary hearing, the judge ruled prosecutors had met the burden of proof and the judge sent the case to Muskegon County Circuit Court for a possible jury trial.
