MOMS GET IN FREE | Muskegon's Hackley and Hume Museum offering Mother's Day deal

The tour includes a look inside both the Hackley and Hume homes, the Fire Barn Museum, the Scolnik House of the Depression Era and a complimentary gift.

MUSKEGON, Mich. — The Hackley and Hume Museum in Muskegon is offering a deal for Muskegon moms this Mother's Day. Moms from Muskegon can take a tour of the historic site for free.

The tour includes a look inside both the Hackley and Hume homes, the Fire Barn Museum, the Scolnik House of the Depression Era and a complimentary gift for visiting mothers.

The Hackley and Hume Historic site holds both the Hackley House and the Hume House. Lumber baron Charles H. Hackley had the houses built between 1887 and 1889 for both him and his business partner Thomas Hume.

The Fire Barn Museum offers visitors a chance to step inside a re-creation of the C. H. Hackley Hose Company No. 2 building, or the old Muskegon fire house formed in 1875. Sponsored by Hackley, the home hosted twelve firemen and was the first of many philanthropic gifts he gave to the City of Muskegon.

Next door to the Fire Barn Museum is the Scolnik House. Named after Herman and Ida Scolnik, who raised their family during The Great Depression, stepping into the home is a chance to step into that period. The home is decorated with period-appropriate flooring, wallpaper, furniture and decor. Visitors can try on clothing from that era, help do laundry and explore the garden while learning about the hardships people faced during The Great Depression.

The tour of these sites begins in the City Barn, or carriage house, at the Hackley and Hume Historic Site. Visitors can find free parking on Webster Ave. and 6th Street.

While moms can get in for free on Mother's Day, other visitors will need to pay normal admission costs. An adult ticket is $15, seniors are $12 and kids ages 2-12 are $5.

Those hoping to take advantage of the Mother's Day deal don't need to register ahead, visitors can walk in during open hours. The last tour will leave at 4 p.m.
