City leaders in Muskegon continue looking for ways to increase the use of the city-owned L.C. Walker Arena.
The city is spending up to $10,000 to a Detroit-area firm hired to do a "revisioning" study. It will review all of the arena's assets and amenities, from restrooms to seating.
City leaders want the arena to be used more frequently and not just for sporting events.
The arena is home to the Lumberjacks junior hockey team and the West Michigan Ironmen indoor football team. An indoor soccer team also players several home games at the Walker.
The long-term goal is for the arena to become financially self-sufficient.
"And the goal is to find the best possible use for the L.C. and to look at it as more than just a hockey rink, " said Frank Peterson, the Muskegon City manager.
A new rum distillery and restaurant for the arena was approved by city leaders and will be built inside the arena at the corner of Western Avenue and Fourth Street.
It's expected to open June 1, 2017.
The "revisioning" study will take two months to complete.
