MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. — A man was killed Monday morning after allegedly breaking into an apartment, assaulting the tenant and then attempting to break into an attached home.
Deputies say the incident happened just before 2 a.m. in the 700 block of Chatterson Road in Egelston Township. A 38-year-old man was allegedly pounding on the window of an apartment attached to a main home. He appeared to be intoxicated, deputies say.
The man broke into the apartment and assaulted the tenant. He then allegedly attempted to break into the main home. The homeowner then shot the man, who later died.
Lt. Austin Aamodt says home invasion attempts like this aren't very common in the area.
"It's not something that's been on our radar as an uptick or anything like that," he says.
Aamodt says that it's even less common to have them end with the suspect dying, because most times the homeowner isn't aware of the attempt.
"They're breaking into the garage that's attached or something like that, rather than into the main dwelling or living space." says Aamodt.
Now, the Sheriff's Office is reviewing the incident to figure out exactly what happened, including possible video on a doorbell camera.
"Checking in all those different avenues," says Aamodt. "Typically we will canvass even surrounding houses right and trying to see if there's anything that can be caught on a home recording system."
The investigation into this incident is now ongoing.
