Teen girl, man in hospital after being pulled from water at Pere Marquette Beach

The Muskegon Police Department said the girl is expected to make a full recovery, but the man is in serious condition.

MUSKEGON, Mich. — A teen girl and a man are in the hospital after they were rescued from the water at Pere Marquette Beach on Friday afternoon.

The Muskegon Police Department said Monday morning that the man is still alive in the hospital.

According to the Muskegon Police Department, around 4:30 p.m. Friday the Muskegon Department of Public Safety responded to a water emergency.

Police said two people from Saginaw, a 13-year-old girl and a 30-year-old man, had begun to struggle in high wave conditions.

Fire officials said the teenage girl was pulled out of the water unresponsive by beachgoers. However, she was resuscitated.

A Muskegon County Sheriff's Department Marine Patrol Unit pulled the male victim out of the water and performed CPR.

Fire officials said both people were taken to a local hospital. Police said the girl is expected to make a full recovery, but the man is in serious condition.

Orlando Santiago was at the beach with his family when he saw the situation unfold. He told 13 ON YOUR SIDE he jumped in the water and helped get the girl out.

"I started running, and I started swimming toward a couple of people out there, really deep in the water and there was a teenage girl that I helped carry back to the land," he said.

While not confirmed by authorities, Santiago said it appeared the two victims were a father and daughter.

He said it was difficult to see, but there was a team effort on the beach to help.

"There were a lot of people helping, a lot of guys out there in the water, helping out as much as they could, there were other beachgoers that were consoling the rest of the family that was crying," Santiago said.

For a time, first responders were investigating if there was a third victim in the water, but they've since confirmed there are no others unaccounted for.

Police said they would like to remind the public to be careful when swimming in Lake Michigan. They said it's important to be mindful of changing weather and surf conditions and that swimming can become challenging around structures like break arms.
