Muskegon flower shop using candlelight to fill orders despite storm damage

One of Muskegon's oldest family-owned businesses is using candlelight to fill flower orders after storms knocked down trees and power in the area.

MUSKEGON, Mich. — Staff at Wasserman's Flowers and Gifts went to work early Tuesday morning to quite a mess.

Storms with dangerous winds up to 70 mph slammed the lakeshore, knocking out power to more than 150,000 Consumers Energy customers.

About 50% of local roads in Muskegon County are impassable due to downed power lines Tuesday morning, Michigan State Police said. Major arteries in the northern portion of the county are also impassable due to downed power lines.

When co-owners Angie and Troy Wasserman made it into work, they found large tree limbs had fallen onto the roof, and they had some damage to merchandise inside, too.

Despite that setback, they got to work.

Employees had to use candles to light the way so they could still fill orders early Tuesday afternoon. The owners told 13 ON YOUR SIDE the candles they're using to see were from a wedding they did a few weeks ago.

Despite having no power to most of the building, the business has a generator they use to keep their flowers cool.

"It is amazing how many texts and things from friends and community members when something like this happens, everybody kind of supports each other, which is really nice," co-owner Angie Wasserman said.

The shop said they've got damage but are still open. You can stop in or give them a call.
