MUSKEGON, Mich. — Everyone escaped a burning home in Muskegon Thursday morning after a woman allegedly set fire to it.
The Muskegon Professional Firefighters said an initial 911 call reported someone intentionally set fire to a home on McIlwraith near Laketon with kids still inside.
When crews made it to the scene, they found flames.
Crews worked an aggressive fire attack and searched for victims inside.
Officials said none were found, and everyone inside made it out before crews arrived. There were no reported injuries.
The Muskegon Police Department said they have a 45-year-old woman in custody after investigators determined the fire was intentionally set. The investigation said the incident stems from a domestic dispute between the woman and the homeowner.
Monica Tate witnessed the fire as she was driving to work. She said she noticed a glow coming from the neighborhood. After pulling in, she saw the house on fire and called 911.
"It's just unbelievable," said Tate. "This is like movie stuff, you know? Just heartbreaking."
Tate said she encountered the homeowner and the 45-year-old woman who was taken into custody. She said that the woman told her she had set the fire.
"I just pray everything works out, she get the help that she needs and the babies that are going to be traumatized from here on out," said Tate.
Police said the home sustained heavy damage and at least one other nearby home was also damaged.
Muskegon Heights, Norton Shores and the North Muskegon fire departments were all called in to help.
