MUSKEGON, Mich. — Spring might still be a couple of months away, but that's not stopping one ice cream shop from kicking off its season.
Its 15th season will be its 2nd season in Downtown Muskegon. The shop was formerly located in North Muskegon.
Owner Michael Scussel said they've all been excited about the new location. Initially, he said they even planned on staying open year-round. However, they decided to close up for the worst part of the winter.
However, he explained that with the winter breaking early it just worked out to open up shop early as well. And although he said it wasn't as busy as summer, their opening weekend had a good turnout.
Hometown Creamery is also a family-owned business.
"My son is 22 and my daughter is 24," said Scussel. "It's something we do together as a family. And we have some other help, and they're kind of like family."
And while the shop has spent 15 years forming that bond, they're now connecting with the downtown community as well.
"To be part of the community down here is amazing," Scussel said. "There's just tons of people down here and everyone just comes out for each other and helps each other out."
Hometown Creamery is operating on limited hours right now. Scussel said hours will expand once school is out for the summer.
