MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) – On Saturday the Muskegon South Pierhead Light will open for public tours.

The Michigan Lighthouse Conservancy owns the south pierhead light, which is located right by the Coast Guard station. Starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, the conservancy will hold a ribbon cutting event to celebrate the start of tours inside the lighthouse.

"This summer we are excited to be opening on a regular schedule for the first time in the lighthouses' history," said Cindy Beth Davis-Dykema.

In previous summer, tours were only offered during special events. The change is thanks in part to a long list of volunteers.

"It has been wonderful to see the outpouring of support from our community. People are very excited about seeing the lighthouse come open," Davis-Dykema said.

A tower tour is $4 for adults and $2 for kids 12 and under. Those who climb the 48 foot tall lighthouse must be three feet tall. If the tours are popular it will generate revenue to open another Muskegon Lighthouse.

"All of the admission fees that come in to help us open this lighthouse will first and foremost work towards the restorations and accessibility issue here," Davis-Dykema said. "Then we will move all of those funds over to the breakwater light with hopes of opening them both up to the public daily in the future."

The lighthouse will be open for tours from Memorial Day to labor Day on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and on Monday and Tuesdays from 12 to 4 p.m.
