Muskegon first responders cooling kids off during hot weather

The Muskegon Fire Department was at Beachwood Park on Tuesday, and they've got more stops planned for the rest of the week.

MUSKEGON, Mich. — Kids got some relief from the heat on Tuesday at Beachwood Park when the Muskegon Fire Department brought their ladder truck to the city's Public Safety Pop-Up Party on Tuesday afternoon.

"This is our fifth Pop-Up Party of the summer, and we have been going to all 15 neighborhoods in the city of Muskegon and just giving all of the residents a great way to positively interact with both police and firefighters," said Emily Morgenstern, who serves as the police community coordinator for the City of Muskegon.

"It's really amazing to see everyone from all different walks of life getting to interact with each other, getting to maybe talk to an officer for the first time in a positive light, and see them in their neighborhoods in a positive light. That doesn't always happen, so it's really heartwarming to see everyone from the community just be able to have fun for an hour and a half and get out and get to know one another."

The next Pop-Up Party will be next week in the Angel Neighborhood, and the city will be announcing details a few days in advance on the Muskegon Police Department Facebook page.

However, because the weather has been so warm, firefighters will be making extra stops this week to cool people off with the ladder truck. The firefighters union told13 ON YOUR SIDE they have the following stops planned.

  • Wednesday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Smith-Ryerson Park at 650 Wood Street
  • Thursday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Seyferth Park at 2250 W. Sherman Boulevard
  • Friday from 3 to 4 p.m. at McLaughlin Community Park at 1278 Terrace Street
  • Friday from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Reese Playfield at 1685 Creston Street
  • Saturday at a time and location to be decided

Note: The above dates are subject to change if there is an emergency.
