Orchard View High School was on lock down today, for the second day in a row, because of threats.
Friday, June 1, the school got a call saying a student had a weapon at school. That started the lockdown around 8 a.m.
Police and school leaders investigated and found an airsoft gun in a bathroom.
The lockdown was lifted by the noon hour.
This comes one day after a written message reading, "I [sic] shooting up the school," was found that lead to a lockdown. The threat was written in a boy's bathroom.
The Muskegon Township Police Department believes the two incidents are related.
Since the gun was found, the student believed to be responsible has been charged with a five year felony alleging he carried a pneumatic gun with unlawful intent and a second misdemeanor charge of possessing a weapon on school property.
"The law treats any threat made against a school or its students as extremely serious," the Muskegon County Prosecutor’s Office said in a press release. "Such a threat is a felony carrying a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. It is no defense to claim that that the threat was a prank or a joke."
Police also said they believe this is an isolated incident and there is no remaining threat to the students or the school.
The superintendent released the following statement:
"The last two days have been highly unusual and upsetting for our students, parents, and staff. At Orchard View Schools safety is our top priority. This is why we will not tolerate any threat to our students. We are fortunate to have such a close relationship with Muskegon Township Police Department and are thankful for their daily presence in our district."
