Powerboat weekend kicks off in Muskegon

The Port City Princess will lead the boats west for the Parade of Power down the Muskegon Channel. Once all the boats are on Lake Michigan they will take part in a poker run.

A street party kicked off the Muskegon Powerboat Weekend Friday June 15, 2018.

According to West Michigan Offshore board member Roger Zuidema, "15 of the biggest and baddest boats" surrounded Hackley Park on Friday. The party coincides with the Taste of Muskegon.

Party goers can sample some of Muskegon's best food and beverages while checking out the boats incredible paint designs and engines. Some that go up to 2700 horsepower.

The GVSU Dance Squad will dance between musical acts and be available for photos in between.

On Saturday the festivities take to the water, at Noon roughly 80 boats will gather on Muskegon Lake outside of the Shoreline Inn. The Port City Princess will lead the boats west for the Parade of Power down the Muskegon Channel. Once all the boats are on Lake Michigan they will take part in a poker run.

One by one the boats will pass the Port City Princess and head toward White Lake for the first poker stop, then head to Grand Haven for the second stop. Zuidema adds, "Boats will return to Muskegon between 2-4pm for poker run stops at the USS Silversides Submarine, USS LST 393 Landing Ship, Hartshorn Marina, and Great Lakes Marina. "If you want to see some awesome boats up close stop by any of these places."

There aren't any formal events on Sunday, but there will be boats anchored off the coast Muskegon State Park Dune Area and in the Breakwater Arms and enjoying some of the hang outs on Muskegon Lake.

Organizers of the event hope to raise more than $6,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. "We consider this a spectator event and look forward to putting on a great show with about 80 boats," said Zuidema.
