Drivers heading south on US-31 in Muskegon were diverted off the highway at Apple Avenue after what police are calling a "major accident" this morning.
The crash, between two cars and a semi-truck, occurred around 9:15 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 20.
First responders said a car merging onto SB US-31 from Apple Avenue lost control and was hit by the semi pulling a double trailer. The collision caused the semi to crash into the bridge abutment for the Apple Avenue overpass. A third vehicle was then hit by the semi and its trailers.
The man driving the semi was taken by ambulance to a local hospital where he is being evaluated by medical staff. The other two drivers were treated and released at the scene.
The Michigan Department and Muskegon County Road Commission were also on scene, assessing the damage to the overpass. After reviewing the area, they say there was no structural damage and the guard rail took the biggest hit.
The semi was carrying a load of gravel which spilled across the highway, a clean-up process that has lasted several hours.
Police reopened the highway shortly after 2:30 p.m.
