Man arrested after hours-long standoff with police

A family member had been assaulted at the home, police say, and was later taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

MUSKEGON COUNTY, Mich. — A man is in custody following an hours-long standoff with Michigan State Police that stemmed from an alleged assault.

The assault happened at a home in the 3000 block of S Riverwood Drive in Dalton Township just after 7 a.m. Wednesday, MSP said. A family member had been assaulted at the home, police say, and was later taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

The suspect refused to cooperate with police and barricaded himself inside the home. Negotiators responded to the scene and attempted to convince the man to come out.

A warrant was obtained for the man's arrest and officers were able to enter the home and safely arrest him. The man is now lodged at the Muskegon County Jail on a charge of assault with intent to do great bodily harm.

Due to the ongoing investigation, police were unable to disclose the relationship between the man and the victim.

"We thank the residents for your patience coming into your neighborhood, it's a very quiet neighborhood and so anytime you have an incident like this it's very, very tragic for the citizens and the residents in the area," said MSP Lt. Michelle Robinson. "So we thank you for your patience. And we just have our thoughts with the victim at this time that they make a speedy recovery from this incident."
