MUSKEGON, Mich. — Crews are working to investigate a fire that caused damage to two buildings and caused the temporary lockdown of the Muskegon County Jail over the weekend.
The fire was called in around 7:18 p.m. Saturday at a vacant commercial building in the 900 block of Pine Street. First responders reported a fire on the roof and heavy smoke coming from the building.
Firefighters were able to keep the fire from spreading to another vacant building, Bad Boy Bail Bonds and C and C Floor Coverings, all of which are in the same block.
Crews remained at the scene until about 2:15 a.m. Sunday.
Moody's Place, a bar that opened on Sept. 30, and the vacant building where the fire began were both heavily damaged, according to authorities.
While the fire was burning, crews noticed heavy smoke near the fresh air intake of the Muskegon County Jail, prompting a temporary lockdown for safety.
No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.
Consumers Energy was also called to the scene to disconnect a large electrical service line that was in front of these buildings. Customers in the area lost power, but it has since been restored.
Pine Street from Apple Avenue to Myrtle Avenue is currently closed due to the possibility of the damaged buildings collapsing, crews say.
Anyone with information on this fire is asked to contact the Muskegon Fire Department or Silent Observer.
