What was that boom? Coal plant in Muskegon has been demolished

The demolition of the former B.C. Cobb Plant continued Saturday morning.

The Muskegon Police Department was warning motorists that they could have faced delays Saturday morning on M-120.

Officers said that the demolition of part of the former B.C. Cobb Plant could cause delays and loud noise should be expected.

The plant, which was one of Michigan’s last “Classic Seven” coal power plants was turned off back in April of 2016.

The activity took place Saturday between 7:45 and 8:30 a.m. They were bringing down the boiler house for units four and five at the site.

Neighbors said a large explosion accompanied the demolition and shook nearby homes.

The removal of the two boilers is the largest remaining part of the demolition process on the property. Before long the project will switch from decommissioning the plant to preparing the site for future development.
