The Kent County Prosecutor's office issued new charges Wednesday, Jan. 2 in the death of Ashley Young, whose dismembered body was found in a Grand Rapids home.
Jared Chance, who was friends with Young, now faces charges of open murder, a felony punishable by a life in prison and multiple counts of tampering with evidence.
Police said they believe Young died on or about Nov. 30. Her torso was found in the basement of Chance's home on Franklin Street SE two days later.
DNA testing revealed the remains were Young. The 31-year-old woman from Kalamazoo County was last seen in Grand Rapids on Nov. 29.
Chance was charged with mutilation of a dead body, a felony carrying a sentence of up to 10 years.
The Kent County Prosecutor's office said it expects Chance to be arraigned on the new charges sometime on Thursday, Jan. 3.
Chance's parents are also facing felony charges for not contacting police after learning that their son allegedly cut up and hid pieces of Young's body.
