Two new K9s join Grand Rapids Police Department

K9 Ace is the youngest dog to join GRPD's K9 team at just 11 months old.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD) has two new "officers" on the force.

Two new K9 Officers have already started their service to the city.

K9 Leo is trained in explosive detection and patrol function.

He has been partnered with Officer Pete Thompson who also worked with Kilo, a K9 officer who retired in September.

Partnering with Officer Kenny Nawrocki is K9 Ace the youngest dog to join GRPD's K9 team at just 11 months old.

Ace is also trained in explosives detection and patrol.

"A lot of our patrol stuff is a lot of tracking-based," said Officer Nawrocki. "So whether that's a missing person or anybody that commits a criminal offense, our goal is to set up a perimeter and then use the canines to find out where they're located, and obviously surrenders the most peaceful and optimistic resolution for us."

Police also provided an update on K9 Dozer who was injured in an on-duty car crash in August.

We're told he is still receiving physical therapy and police have not yet made a decision on if he will return to duty.
