MUSKEGON, Mich. — There's a new mural in Muskegon honoring the lengthy baseball history at Marsh Field.
The mural was unveiled Saturday evening ahead of the Muskegon Clippers baseball game.
Judy Hayner is the director of the Muskegon City Public Art Initiative and said this is the eighth of 10 pieces making up the project.
"I think that the more Muskegon understands its history, the more proud that they will be of who they are and what this community is," she said.
The mural was crafted by a team of artists known as the Walldogs. This is their third mural in Muskegon.
Artist Jay Allen said playing and coaching ball himself helped inspire the passion he put into the piece.
"I think when the community properly portrays the love and passion it has for itself and for its members and for its amenities, it's easy to get people to rally behind you and get things done and they got this done," said Allen.
Pete Gawkowski is the owner of the Muskegon Clippers and also manages the field for the city.
"We've counted at least 28 Hall of Famers in the Baseball Hall of Fame, that have either played here or managed here or announced here," he said.
Honoring the history, he said it also adds to the ongoing work to revitalize the field that hundreds of people enjoy every week.
It's a project with big plans for the future, as shown in potential renovation plans displayed at the field Saturday.
"Hopefully we can attract some donors and see what we're doing here, what we've done here and what our vision is for the future. And that is to even do more than we're doing now, even get into a larger league and play more games, draw more people, good economic thing for the city," Gawkowski said.
