GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Northbound US-131 near Wealthy Street reopened around 9 a.m. on Sunday after it was shut down for two back-to-back crashes.

According to the Grand Rapids Police Department, around 7:15 a.m. officers responded to a two-car crash on northbound US-131 near the Wealthy Street exit ramp.

Officers said when they arrived at the scene, they found one vehicle had rolled over and another was engulfed in flames.

Occupants of both vehicles were removed safely and the Grand Rapids Fire Department came to the scene to put the fire out, GRPD said.

Officers said while they were securing this scene, a second two-car crash happened nearby, so they closed northbound US-131 at Franklin Street SE.

No one was injured in the second crash, police said.

According to officers, the initial investigation of the first crash suggests that both vehicles were traveling northbound on US-131 when an SUV rear-ended a smaller sedan, causing the SUV to roll over and the sedan to catch on fire.

The driver of the sedan had minor injuries and was taken to the hospital, police said.

Officers said the SUV was occupied by five people, including a 1-year-old. Two occupants were taken to a local hospital and the child was not injured.

According to police, the driver of the SUV was taken into custody on a suspected OWI. Both alcohol and speed are believed to be factors in the crash, officers said.
