NORTON SHORES, Mich. — A Norton Shores intersection is still closed following a water main break over the weekend, according to the city's Director of Public Works James Murphy.

He said the 12-inch water main suffered a break on Seminole Road on the east side of the intersection at Lake Harbor Road just before midnight on Saturday, Aug. 17.

Murphy said crews were alerted to the break by police and when they arrived on site and assessed the situation, the water main was immediately shut down.

For about 12 hours, the water was turned off for residents along Seminole Road between Lake Harbor Road and Wickham Drive, including Courtland Drive.

He said crews worked through the night and had the broken piece of pipe removed and replaced just before 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.

However, the water main break required more work to fix than just a replacement of the broken section. It damaged pavement on the east and north legs of the intersection, which was removed and will need to be replaced.

Murphy said they still don't know what caused the break, but they estimate it'll cost between $35,000 and $45,000 to fix it.

He said the city is working towards having the intersection fully open on Sunday, Aug. 25.

Currently, traffic from the south leg of the intersection, Lake Harbor Road, can access the west leg of the intersection, Seminole Road.
