Woman severely injured after dog drags her out of her home, attacks her on front lawn

The woman was attacked Monday morning by a dog her son brought home.

NORTON SHORES, Mich. — A Norton Shores woman is recovering after she was attacked by a dog at her home Monday morning.

Norton Shores Fire Chief Bob Gagnon said his crew, along with Norton Shores Police, responded to a call about the attack.

He said a person driving by noticed the woman, who has not been identified, lying facedown on her lawn as the Rottweiler attacked her.

The victim already had a dog at home. Officials said her son had brought home the dog that attacked her after he found it.

"The son noticed it in front of his place of employment, that there was a dog chained to a fence or chained to a telephone pole. And the son, you know, wanted to do good and brought the dog in. Unfortunately, that dog was the aggressor of the two dogs and caused this incident to happen,” said Gagnon.

It's not yet known if the attack happened the same day her son brought the dog home, or how the attack started.

Officials said the attack began in the home before the dog dragged the woman out of her home and continued its attack on her front lawn.

The attack was so severe that she received injuries on both of her arms.

"The extent of the injuries were pretty severe at this point. So severe, that are we probably unsure whether or not we are going to likely be able to save the arm. So, she did have injuries to both arms, one being more severe than the other," said Gagnon.

But even as bad as the attack was, Gagnon said it could have been much worse.

"The only way that this incident was brought about is because the passerby saw the woman lying in the front yard, facedown, being attacked by a dog. So this this could have ended much worse. Thankfully a passerby and neighbor noticed it and called 911 immediately,” said Gagnon.

He said that both dogs are currently in custody at Pound Buddies. It’s unclear if anyone will be charged in this case.

He said it’s important to know that you must be cautious with animals when you don’t have knowledge about their history of aggression.
