Tuesday morning storms knock down trees in Oceana County

The sheriff's office said no one was hurt, but widespread damaging winds knocked down trees and power.

OCEANA COUNTY, Mich — The Oceana County Sheriff's Office said despite thunderstorms producing damaging winds Tuesday morning, no one was hurt.

These thunderstorms caused extensive damage across West Michigan, resulting in many roads being blocked by downed trees and power lines.

In Oceana County, emergency managers said dispatchers fielded more than 550 calls to 911 as of noon on Tuesday.

"There are more trees down than we can count as well as power outages and damage to property," Oceana County Sheriff Craig Mast said. "Our dispatchers at Mason-Oceana 911 did a tremendous job fielding so many calls, prioritizing them and sending units where they are needed most."

911 Director Ray Hasil had a large tree fall into his backyard and pool, and it knocked out power.

Because of backup generators and redundancy measures, the 911 call center was able to stay online without any issues, the sheriff said.

As of 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, nearly 24% of Consumers Energy customers in Oceana County were without power. That's about 1,440 homes.
