Officer hurt in alleged assault by prisoner at Mich. Reformatory

Authorities are investigating an alleged assault by a prisoner after a Michigan corrections officer fell down a flight of steps, hitting his head on a concrete floor.

ID=71023256IONIA, Mich. (WZZM) -- Authorities are investigating an alleged assault by a prisoner after a Michigan corrections officer fell down a flight of steps, hitting his head on a concrete floor.

Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Chris Gautz told WZZM 13 that shortly before noon on Thursday, a male officer was allegedly assaulted at the Michigan Reformatory in Ionia. According to Gautz, the officer had been talking to a prisoner and ordered the prisoner to do something, but the prisoner didn't comply. The officer had been near the top of a flight of stairs. The prisoner allegedly pushed the officer down those steps. Another officer nearby immediately detained the prisoner, who was transferred to another facility within an hour, Gautz said.

Gautz also said the injured officer was taken to an area hospital. He couldn't give out the officer's specific medical condition but said reports he'd seen indicated the officer was alert and talkative. "Any time you deal with a hit to the head, it's a serious issue," Gautz added.
