Omaha Steaks stolen from Muskegon couple in most recent porch piracy

Scott and Juna Killian are victims of a Grinch rolling around Muskegon. On Tuesday, a family member of the couple sent them a Christmas present.

MUSKEGON, Mich. — Scott and Juna Killion are victims of a Grinch rolling around Muskegon.

On Tuesday, a family member of the couple sent them a Christmas present delivered to their door.

It was something they definitely would have wanted.

"Come to find out it was Omaha Steaks," said Scott. "It was a mixed pack with hamburgers, steaks, chicken, and different types of cheesecake"

Surveillance video shows a UPS Driver showing up at the Killian's home, dropping off the package of assorted meats, and then leaving.

Around a minute later, two men are seen walking up to the home, picking up the package, and then leaving.

"What they're doing is making a negative impact on other people around them," said Juna.

Dealing with porch pirates is nothing new to companies like Amazon.

Amazon spokesperson Austin Stowe has some ideas to protect your property as those last-minute Christmas gifts start to come in.

"If you're actually not at your house, there's a couple different options as well," said Stowe. "What you can do is have your package delivered to a secure location, whether that be to an Amazon locker, you can actually have packages delivered to wholefoods to be picked up, and we have a thousand different partners we work with for secure drop-off and pick up locations."

That advice is something the Killians say, they'll be looking Into in the future when it comes to package delivery.

"I think what we're gonna eventually do is go through ups and then we're going to have them hold all the packages down there and then we'll just go down and pick it up ourselves," said Stowe.

The Grand Rapids Crime Prevention Unit has some tips to avoid becoming a victim of package theft:

  1. If possible, have your package delivered to your place of work.
  2. Both FedEx and UPS have options to hold packages at a local location, instead of being dropped off at your home.
  3. UPS offers Access Points, often at local Walgreens, Michaels, CVS and other stores.

The United States Postal Service also offers some tips to avoid being a porch pirate victim:

  1. Don’t leave your delivered mail and packages unattended
  2. Going out of town? Hold your mail at your local Post Office
  3. Ship using Hold for Pickup
  4. Customize the delivery. If you know the package will not fit in your mailbox and you won’t be home to receive it, you can authorize the carrier to leave it in a specified location. Visit usps.com, enter the tracking number in Track a Package, and select Delivery Instructions.
  5. Secure the shipment using USPS Special Services. Signature Confirmation helps ensure the package ends up in the right hands by requiring a signature at the time of delivery.
