Child dead, four others injured after overnight house fire in Kent County

The boy's father suffered critical burn injuries, while three others went to the hospital with smoke inhalation.

KENT COUNTY, Mich. — A 4-year-old child was found dead inside a burning home Wednesday morning.

Four others, including the child's 27-year-old father, were hurt.

The Kent County Sheriff's Office said someone called 911 around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday about a house fire along Flat River Drive SE in Vergennes Township near the Lowell City Airport.

Within several minutes, Lowell Area Firefighters made it to the home to find flames.

A 27-year-old man was in critical condition due to burn wounds.

The first firefighter to make it to the scene went into the burning home knowing that a child was still inside the house.

The firefighter became disoriented because of the heavy fire conditions, but as more help arrived, the firefighters found the boy.

The sheriff's office said one firefighter suffered minor burns as they retrieved the boy's body.

The boy's father was rushed to an area hospital where he remains in critical condition.

A 27-year-old woman, a 64-year-old man, and a 54-year-old woman all went to an area hospital for smoke inhalation treatment. They were all released from the hospital.

Michigan State Police are helping determine the origin and cause of the fire.

Several area fire departments and Rockford Ambulance assisted during the fire.
