GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Yelp created a list of America's best brunch spots and a café in Grand Rapids took a top spot.
Lucys Café in the Creston neighborhood placed 12th in a recent survey on Yelp of the top brunch spots in the nation — and it was the only Michigan restaurant to even place on the list.
Lucys was originally built and operated as Daane's Market.
The market was co-founded in 1959 by David Daane and his brother-in-law Simon VanderKooy. In 1978, it was renamed to D'Amico's Food Mart, and it successfully operated for 33 years until the market closed in 2011.
The building then sat empty until VanderKooy's children and owners of the property, Brian VanderKooy, Jan VanderKooy and Sue Despre stepped in in 2016.
The siblings renovated the space into two restaurants, Brighton Graye's Bistro and Little Lucy's Cafe.
Over time, the Brighton's concept was discontinued.
However, Lucys has continued to thrive and become a local favorite.
