OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. — Eight people were hurt in a crash involving a minivan and a dump truck Tuesday morning in Blendon Township.

That's according to Ottawa County Sheriff Captain Jacob Sparks, who said the wreck happened around 11:25 a.m. near the intersection of Tyler Street and 72nd Avenue.

Captain Sparks said a dump truck collided with a minivan. Inside the minivan, two adults in their 60s and five children between the ages of 3 and 10 years old were injured.

Of those children, two of them were taken to a hospital in Grand Rapids for critical injuries. The other three were last listed in stable condition.

The other driver of the commercial vehicle, a 58-year-old man from Jenison, was also hurt. He went to the hospital for an arm injury.

Three different EMS providers responded to the scene.

Crash scene investigators interviewed witnesses and watched video evidence that showed the minivan was headed on Tyler Street and stopped at the stop sign for 72nd Avenue.

The minivan then started up directly into the path of the dump truck. Law enforcement said 72nd Avenue does not have a stop sign for north and southbound traffic at this intersection.

Both vehicles collided and then came to rest in a cornfield on the east side of 72nd Avenue.

The intersection was closed for several hours while emergency crews cleared the scene.

Investigators said any witnesses who have not yet talked with deputies about what they saw are encouraged to call the Ottawa County Central Dispatch at 1-800-249-0911.
