OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. — The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office (OCSO) announced the appointment of a new Undersheriff on Tuesday.
Sergeant Eric DeBoer will assume the position of Undersheriff on March 3, 2024.
The appointment of DeBoer comes less than a week after Ottawa County Undersheriff Valerie Weiss announced her retirement. Weiss worked in law enforcement for 30 years, beginning her career with the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office in 1995 as a patrol deputy.
DeBoer also has a long history with the department, beginning in 1999 as a Reserve Deputy. He was then promoted several times throughout the years to Road Patrol Deputy, Detective and then Road Patrol Sergeant in 2022.
"Eric has been instrumental in many committees, project planning and implementation through the years at the Sheriff’s Office. Eric has demonstrated a strong understanding of the agency and its related responsibilities. Throughout Eric’s career with the agency, Eric has always displayed the talents, abilities, and skill level for this important leadership role," Ottawa County Sheriff Steve Kempker wrote in a release.
DeBoer earned an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Kalamazoo Community College, a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Calvin University and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Grand Valley State University.
"The Sheriff’s Office Executive team and I are looking forward to working with Eric during the transitional period as he prepares to take over the Undersheriff responsibilities," Sheriff Kempker added.
