OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. — 13 ON YOUR SIDE received several 911 calls from Ottawa County dispatch surrounding a domestic situation that authorities say left a woman shot and a man stabbed.
The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office said the altercation between the couple happened around 9 a.m. on Thursday, May 23 near Allendale in Robinson Township.
Calls from three different callers detail scary moments from that morning. One was a passing by truck driver and another appeared to be a women caring for the involved couple's children in some way.
One caller told dispatchers, "gunshots are going off, somebody's laying in the front yard."
Court documents filed in the case said an argument led to a man, Vaughn Smith, shooting his girlfriend in front of their kids while their teenage son intervened.
In an effort to protect the woman and other children, a 16-year-old boy in the home stabbed the man in the neck, deputies said.
Another caller said, "I'm pretty sure that he had a knife, like a kitchen knife."
Smith was arraigned Wednesday in 58th District Court on two counts of assault with intent to murder, three counts of felony firearms and one count of possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
His bond was set at $5,000,000 and he remains in the Ottawa County Jail.
The mother of the children was shot in the leg and head, but is now out of the hospital. None of the children, including the 16-year-old, were hurt.
