OTTAWA COUNTY, Mich. — West Nile virus was detected in a mosquito in southwestern Ottawa County, according to the Ottawa County Department of Public Health (OCDPH).

While the department said the virus was not detected in a human, this detection shows that West Nile is circulating through the area. It is most likely to be spread by an infected mosquito.

Although most people who contract the virus don't have symptoms, the most common symptoms are fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea and rash. For some, these symptoms can be serious. There is no cure or vaccine for the virus.

In 2024, there have been no reported cases of West Nile virus in a human in Ottawa County. Back in September, two people in the county were hospitalized with the virus.

The OCDPH is encouraging Michiganders to follow these tips:

  • Use insect repellent when you are outside.
  • Wear light colored and long-sleeved shirts and pants.
  • Treat clothing and outdoor gear with insect repellent.
  • Take steps to control mosquitos in your yard by removing standing water around your home. This can include water in bird baths, children’s wading pools, water bowls for your pets, or in any container that can collect water.

Other mosquito-borne viruses have been found in Kent County as well. Both Jamestown Canyon virus and West Nile virus were detected earlier this summer.
